Seaweed ashes were an early source of sodium carbonate, which gave it the name soda ash. Pure sodium carbonate is a white, odorless powder and is one of the fundamental industrial chemicals. It is used in the manufacture of glass, chemicals, soaps, and detergents, and is used for processing wood pulp and refining aluminum.
